Join us for an engaging evening of conversation with acclaimed comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick. Through stories from her life and career, DeConnick will reflect on the comic book industry, the creative process, and what it means to find your voice in storytelling.

DeConnick is best known for her work on Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” and DC Comics’ “Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons,” which won an Eisner Award. In her presentation, she will reflect on her career in comics and share insights into storytelling, the creative process and the transformative power of finding one’s voice. The discussion will also explore how comics can serve as a platform for activism and artistic expression.

DeConnick’s career spans mainstream and independent comics, film, television and stage. Her original comic series “Bitch Planet” and “Pretty Deadly” are New York Times bestsellers, and her recent comic book “FML” by Dark Horse Comics has been praised for its satirical take on high school and the feminist punk movement of the 1990s.

In addition to her comics work, DeConnick contributed to the billion-dollar-grossing “Captain Marvel” film and consulted on “The Marvels” with Marvel Studios. Her stage writing debut, “Awakening,” premiered at the Wynn Las Vegas in 2022.

This intimate discussion invites students and community members to explore the power of comics as both art and activism.
