This 45-50 hour course is designed to help aspiring kayak instructors improve their teaching abilities, while adhering to the ACA’s golden standard of excellence.
The course is divided into 2 components: The Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). The exam happens concurrently with the development portion of the class in the form of giving presentations and providing demonstrations. Performance is also evaluated with regard to paddling ability. Simulations of rescue scenarios, and kayak instructional situations will also be used including a 2 day simulated kayak school, taught and designed by the kayak instructor candidates.

To finalize your registration and secure a spot on the course, you must pay at the Cascades Adventures office (RESH 118). You must pay no later than three business days after your initial registration on Bend Beavs Central or you will be taken off the registration list. Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC):
Breathe independently (i.e., does not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
Independently maintain sealed airway passages while underwater
Independently hold head upright without neck/head support
Manage personal care independently or with the assistance of a companion
Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with the assistance of a companion
Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face-up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket*
Get on / off or in/out of a paddle craft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
Independently get out and from under a capsized paddle craft*
Remount or reenter the paddle craft following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities, and rescues listed in the appropriate Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation.
Cascades Adventures and Sundance Kayak School operate on a challenge-by-choice basis.
