Experiential Learning Corner

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers internships for high school students and degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students studying science and agriculture, management, business, technology, and many other fields. They also offer programs for recent graduates from qualifying institutions. Their Pathways Internship program provides paid work experiences for students who are in high school or pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an accredited college or university. Interns may work during the summer, fall, spring, or year-round. 

The NRCS recently posted job announcements for over 130 Pathways Internships for summer 2024. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply on or soon after the job posting date(s).

Job of the Week

Linux Support Specialist
Venture Authority in Bend, Oregon

Estimated Pay:
$20.00-$30.00/hour

Role Description:

Small, high tech firm in Bend, Oregon seeks a candidate with Linux experience. The assignment is hourly and requires maintaining a Linux and Windows desktop environment. The time required varies from 5-10 + hours per month, depending on the candidate's skills. The schedule is ultra-flexible and most work will be done remotely. 

College students and graduates are welcome. Teachers and CS lab techs too! Knowledge of Linux OS and command line confidence are key requirements. Experience with any of the primary distributions will suffice; Debian, Ubunto, Fedora, Centos, LMDE, Gentoo, etc.

Here are the primary goals: 

• Maintain; hardware, packages and programs, 

• Research and recommend; programs, extensions and hardware, 

• Diagnose system issues, 

• Schedule tasks, backups and maintenance, 

• Integrate system with Windows machine, smartphone and remote backup. 

Candidates with advanced knowledge of browsers and cloud based applications will be considered with merit. This includes; Google, Chrome, Firefox, Dropbox, Slack, Asana, Tomboy, Discord, Telegram, Skype, etc.
