Dr. Engel holds degrees in philosophy, architectural design, and histories and theories of art, architecture, and design. He has studied and taught internationally, across universities in the upper Midwest, the United Kingdom, and the San Francisco Bay Area before arriving in Bend. His first book "Colin Rowe's Gospel of Modern Architecture," was published in 2022, and its investigation of pedagogies that provoke curiosity and critical thinking between history and design continue to direct his teaching. Current research focuses on the architecture of Central Oregon, visual representations of architecture in myths, the role of absurdity in visual art, and indigenous architecture in North America.
